FAQs

Frequently asked questions

An addiction is a chronic dysfunction of the brain system that involves reward, motivation, and memory. It’s about the way your body craves a substance or behavior, especially if it causes a compulsive or obsessive pattern.

Someone experiencing an addiction will:

  1. be unable stay away from the substance or stop the addictive behavior
  2. display a lack of self-control
  3. have an increased desire for the substance or behavior
  4. dismiss how their behavior may be causing problems
  5. experience withdrawal symptoms{physical and psychological}

Over time, addictions can seriously interfere with your daily life. People experiencing addiction are also prone to cycles of relapse and remission. This means they may cycle between intense and mild use. Despite these cycles, addictions will typically worsen over time. They can lead to permanent health complications and serious consequences like bankruptcy.

Most signs of addiction relate to a person’s impaired ability to maintain self-control. This includes changes that are:

  1. social, such as seeking out situations that encourage a substance or behavior
  2. behavioral, such increased secrecy
  3. health related, such as insomnia or memory loss
  4. related to personality

Someone with an addition won’t stop their behavior, even if they recognize the problems the addiction is causing. In some cases, they’ll also display a lack of control, like using more than intended.

Some behavior and emotional changes associated with addiction include:

  1. unrealistic or poor assessment of the pros and cons associated with using substances or behaviors
  2. blaming other factors or people for their problems
  3. increased levels of anxiety, depression, and sadness
  4. increased sensitivity and more severe reactions to stress
  5. trouble identifying feelings
  6. trouble telling the difference between feelings and the physical sensations of one’s emotion

An essential element of drug addiction treatment is treatment length—staying with a treatment program long enough to emerge with confidence in their newly learned skills and tools for remaining in recovery. Residential rehab provides 24-hour care to help individuals achieve and maintain recovery from addiction.

These include:

  1. Medically supported detox and withdrawal, if needed.
  2. Medically supported maintenance care, if needed.
  3. Individual therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
  4. Family or couples counseling.
  5. Building skills and tools that are necessary for life post treatment.
  6. Follow-up care after the formalized program ends.

Residential rehab, and many types of inpatient rehab, offers certain benefits that other forms of treatments may not always offer. Some of these benefits include:

  1. The ability to detox in a safe and secure environment offering 24/7 care and support.
  2. The ability to work through substance abuse issues, codependency, co-occurring disorders, and trauma in a safe and secure environment.
  3. Various therapies.

A community with whom to process all stages of alcohol and substance abuse recovery.
